Jasmine Heart

Jasmine Heart (2024) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

This artwork was inspired by my love, whom I am more and more grateful for everyday. The jasmine plant that I used as the reference for this artwork was gifted to me by him. It’s a large plant, and he brought it on the bus to the city centre with him as a gift when we went to celebrate my birthday last year. Seeing him at the bus stop with his wonderful smile and a huge jasmine plant in his arms is such a wholesome memory to me!

Diesel (Commission)

Diesel (2022) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

This is my first ever pet portrait commission, featuring a much-loved boxer dog called Diesel who has unfortunately passed away. It really is such an honour to have somebody trust me enough to create an artwork honouring a pet that has passed away. Dogs truly become part of the family, and it is such a huge loss when we lose them. It was nice getting to know Diesel through his owner and the time spent creating his likeness.

Where to Purchase

This piece was a private commission and no copies will be sold to the general public.

Brain Fog (2022) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

This is arguably my favourite piece of artwork that I’ve ever made. I have finally begun to feel confident enough in my abilities as an artist to be able to move away from more standard realism and be more creative with how I use my realism skillset to capture my experiences as a disabled person.

This piece is named after the symptom it represents, “Brain Fog”, which is a very appropriate name for the feeling. When I’m flaring up, it’s very common for me to feel like the information is there and it should be obvious, but I just can’t find it. That’s why I chose a huge signpost to represent organised thoughts, obscured by the fog which means the silhouetted figure is far less likely to be able to find what she needs. I rely so heavily on post-its and phone reminders during those times to keep me on track.

My favourite little detail is the “would’ve been handy 2 hours ago” on the signpost. I chuckled to myself when I was writing that. It’s so frustrating when you finally remember something, but it’s already long past the point of being useful.

This piece was created as a Christmas present for my mother. Rimmey was a much loved dog she had from her early twenties up until I was around 8 years old. He was an incredibly gentle and good-natured dog, and we were incredibly lucky to have been blessed with him.

Galaxies

Galaxies (2021) by Nicola Lucy, set of two paintings. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

These were created on a day that I was not feeling too great. I wanted to create artworks that were quick and simple, but still looked nice. I created the galaxy effect by creating blocks of colour with water-based marker pens, and then using water to cause the ink to bleed. Then I splattered white gouache to create stars, and used a POSCA to add the moon and further (more intentionally placed) stars. Lastly, I used a grey marker to add the distant mountains, and a black marker to add the closer ones.

Where to Purchase

The originals for both of these have been sold. Prints on various products for both of these are for sale in my Redbubble store: Green Galaxy & Purple Galaxy.

Be Patient With M.E

Be Patient With M.E (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

This is an artwork that I’ve been wanting to make for quite some time. As somebody who suffers from invisible disabilities, the reality of what people see versus how my body feels can be vastly different – and this can lead to some quite hurtful assumptions.

“Be patient with M.E” is a reminder to both those around me and myself that I can’t always do what an able bodied person can and that sometimes a little more patience is needed. Sometimes the only way I can stop my body from breaking down is to pace myself.

The concept behind the art style is that whilst I may present a relatively well put together version of myself to mask my illness, most people have never seen me when I struggle the most as I can’t leave my room. The best version of myself is presented as a finished piece, which is the version that is displayed publicly, whereas me struggling is presented as rough sketches – something usually kept hidden away in a sketchbook.

With long-COVID being found to be incredibly similar to M.E, it’s more important than ever to raise awareness for M.E and similar conditions. Chronically ill people have a tendency to hide and belittle their symptoms so to not become a “burden”, so many are blissfully unaware of how common they are.

Doing Just Fine (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

This is actually the first venting art piece I’ve ever done. I’ve never drawn a hand before, and I’m still new to watercolour, but spite is one hell of a motivator.
