Echeveria

Echeveria (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

About a month or so ago I had a concussion, wandered off dazed and confused to Tesco, and came back with a little succulent friend. I wasn’t sure it’d live very long with me taking care of it, so I decided to capture it in an art piece. Ironically, the plant started thriving immediately, whereas the art piece took over a month to complete.

I believe from Googling it that it’s a type of Echeveria succulent, but I’m not sure which one. If anyone knows, please tell me!

Honey Bee

Honey Bee (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

I picked up some new brushes and A6 watercolour postcards yesterday and decided to try to paint a little Manchester bee.

I don’t paint very often, so there are a lot of mistakes, but I think it’s not bad considering my experience level! When it comes to traditional art, you have to role with the punches a lot more when mistakes are made, but I had fun with it!

Purdy The Tabby Cat

Purdy (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

Created for my mother’s 50th birthday, this is a very special piece to me as it depicts one of our old cats, Purdy. She was the sweetest old soul, with a purr that could be heard across the room.

I wanted to try to achieve a loose, more painterly look with this piece. It felt more freeing to do it in this style, rather than focusing on the specific details.

Heart

I wanted to try to achieve a loose, more painterly look with this piece. It felt more freeing to do it in this style, rather than focusing on the specific details. My interest in anatomical art comes from my job where I assist in dissections of human organs.

Violets

Violets (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

Violets have a very beautiful history for queer women. Sappho of Lesbos, of Ancient Greece, often referenced women adorned in many crowns of violets, and this created an association between the love between two women and violets that has lasted for centuries. Gifting violets became a subtle code for women to express their love for each other. As February is LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK, it felt like a good time to share this piece of history.

Although not my favourite flowers aesthetically, violets certainly have my favourite symbology.

This is only my second ever time using alcohol based markers, and my first time ever doing a full piece with them. The piece is by no means perfect, but it’s an improvement over my first play with the markers, and for that I’m quite proud. I used coloured pencils to add extra texture.

Tranquil Koi

Tranquil Koi (2021) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

I wanted to create this piece to feel very fluid, and less like the stiff perfectionism I usually go for within my realism. It was created as an escape from the pressure I felt working within a hospital during a pandemic.

The specific subject matter arose when my good friend Amina and I decided to both create an art piece for the same theme. As we are both Pisces, we decided that as our theme, which led to me choosing two koi.

Miniature Cactus

Miniature Cactus (2020) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

I was tempted not to upload this due to its simplicity compared to the realism I normally prefer, but I enjoyed this one and appreciated not putting the pressure on myself to create something too realistic.

Short, sweet, simple. I kind of like it.

Brain

Brain (2020) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

They said “just draw whatever’s in your head right now” so…

Neuroscience is actually my area of speciality and I’ve been wanting to go over my degree content to re-learn it all properly. Part of the reason I wanted to draw a brain is just so I could annotate it when I’m going over neuroanatomy. But aside from that, it’s a great subject to study creating form.

A Gift

A Gift (2020) by Nicola Lucy. Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

This piece was inspired by some roses that were gifted from the public to hospital workers like myself, as a thank you for all of the hard work that we were doing during the pandemic. It was the first bouquet of flowers ever given to me. Within a week of receiving them, I fell ill with coronavirus symptoms and had to self-isolate.

Seeing those roses in my kitchen every day helped remind me, whilst I most likely fell ill because of my job in the hospital, that my work was appreciated and that I should be proud of what I did.

To me, these roses represent that time. They represent the beautiful boom of support from the public for those working in healthcare. They represent the “we’ll get through this together” attitude that reigned during the earlier part of the pandemic.

Skull

Pencil sketch of a human skull.
Skull (2019) by Nicola Lucy.  Please do not redistribute via any means, claim as your own, or copy this artwork.

During my lunch breaks at work, I’ve started doing drawing studies. This was one that I decided to put a couple of hours into and eventually it turned into an actual piece. The pencil on the textured paper creates a nice textured effect on the final image.
